Choosing the Right Lenticular Lens |
|

So far we've gone through these 4 Basics of Lenticular Design: Texture, Colors/Tones, Building your Lenticular Files, and Type/Titles/Logos. Our 5th and final "Basic" is Choosing the Right Lens. What I've done is put together what I feel is a handy general guideline of lenses.
The Lenses: LPI refers to Lines Per Inch. Mil refers to thickness, but does not mean millimeters.
- 10 mil - 150 lpi: Labels, available in both web and sheet
- 14mil - 100lpi: General Lens (hand held small - medium)
- 18mil - 75 lpi: General Lens (hand held medium - large and poster)
- 20mil - 60 lpi: Litho Flip/Animation Lens & Large Format
- 23mil - 100 lpi: 3D Specialty Lens
- 33mil - 40 lpi: Large Format General
The Fine Print: The listing is based on common lenses for the lenticular litho printing process. This is our area of expertise, so I'm not going to discuss lenses I dont personally have experience with. Secondly, choosing the right lens is an art, not a science. Lastly, and most importantly, the lens choice all depends on your art, the amount of motion/animation you are trying to get, the size, the orientation, and more...
The Gist: Let the experts help you decide what is best for your art, your project and what will fit your budget. We love lenticular and have your best interest in mind. =)
The picture above has nothing to do with lenticular, but it's beautiful. Thanks to Pardesi* and Flickr's Creative Commons.
